Description

Real-time Image-based Lighting of Glints. Real-Time Image-based Lighting of Glints presents a real-time approximation for image-based lighting of sparkling microfacet materials by Tom Kneiphof and Reinhard Klein at the University of Bonn, for EGSR 2025 in Computer Graphics Forum. This URL is the arXiv abs page for that paper.

The method partitions an environment map into a few homogeneous radiance regions, filters indicator functions with the NDF using standard IBL prefiltering fast enough per frame, and hierarchically samples multinomial microfacet assignment via a dual-gated Gaussian binomial approximation. It extends counting-model glint shading to IBL with density-independent cost and modest overhead over directional glints. Chromatic glints and multiple scattering are out of scope.

It is for advanced real-time researchers and engine developers who already ship microfacet BRDFs and filtered environment maps. Prior glint counting-model papers help.

Access is a free arXiv abstract page with HTML abstract, metadata, and PDF download links.

It is useful when adding glittery IBL for paints, fabrics, or ornaments without expensive stochastic searches. Link last verified accessible on 2026-09-29. Link last verified accessible on 2026-09-28.
