Mecanim2Texture is a Unity editor tool by ryanslikesocool that bakes Mecanim skinned mesh animation into 2D textures. The repo includes a Texture Creator, UV Mapper, and Shader Graph HLSL nodes.
The creator samples vertices each frame via editor coroutines, exporting LDR PNG or HDR EXR with configurable FPS, frames, and scale. Bake All builds Texture2DArrays. The UV Mapper writes vertex-index UVs; custom nodes replay motion with point filtering.
For intermediate Unity artists and programmers exploring vertex-animation textures or crowd LOD. Requires Skinned Mesh Renderers, Animator clips, and the Editor Coroutines package.
Use Window/ifelse/Mecanim2Texture: container rigs, select clips, review size estimates, and leave the window open until baking completes.
Modest GitHub interest reflects a niche VAT-style workflow from standard Mecanim clips, not official Unity support.
