Description

BorisTheBrave’s 2018 post is the 3D installment of a marching-cubes series on smooth destructible terrain. It assumes the earlier 2D article and labels each cube’s eight corners inside or outside the solid.

That yields 256 corner combinations; rotations and inversions reduce them to 18 base cases for a reusable lookup table. Faces drawn per cell join into a boundary mesh across the grid.

The article notes why fifteen-case tables from many references need three extra patterns so neighboring cells share consistent face edges; otherwise holes appear. Adaptive edges still use scalar depth when the field provides it.

Code lives in the CC0 mc-dc Python repository; the blog emphasizes concepts and shows a sphere with sliver triangles before pointing readers to dual contouring.

Widely linked in procedural-geometry threads as a clear on-ramp; the page was revised through 2025.
