niagara: Descriptor heaps
Arseny Kapoulkine
Visit resource ↗Description
Niagara series livestream by Arseny Kapoulkine integrating Vulkan VK_EXT_descriptor_heap into a from-scratch renderer. This URL is one episode on descriptor heaps.
It frames heaps as a future replacement for classic descriptor sets and descriptor buffers, notes EXT status and uneven drivers, and works through optional support while switching the renderer when the extension is present. Stream work covers resource and sampler heaps, writing descriptors into heap memory, binding heaps, and set-and-binding mappings reflected in public niagara day-32 commits.
Viewers should know Vulkan descriptors, pipelines, and bindless-style binding. Pace assumes advanced engine programmers following the series.
Free YouTube live-coding session. Companion code is in the zeux/niagara GitHub project.
Useful for watching a real renderer adopt descriptor heaps while the extension story is still new.

Custom Render Passes in Unity is Alexander Ameye's July 2021 ameye.dev note on URP ScriptableRendererFeature and ScriptableRenderPass boilerplate, heavily commented where Unity SRP documentation still feels sparse. The sample applies a two-pass box blur: blit camera color to a temporary buffer, blur vertically then horizontally, with adjustable strength and downsampling.
