Description

Ray Tracing using HIP is an AMD technical report (No. 26-01-4793, January 2026) by Atsushi Yoshimura, Kenta Eto, Daniel Meister, and Takahiro Harada that teaches ray tracing basics with HIP GPU code and the HIPRT framework.

Sections cover Orochi for runtime HIP/CUDA backend switching, ray-triangle intersection, pinhole cameras and lens distortion, ambient occlusion with cosine-weighted sampling, Monte Carlo path tracing with throughput, bounding volumes and BVHs, and building HIPRT geometries and scenes with hardware ray intersection on RDNA2 and later AMD GPUs. A closing chapter points to bidirectional methods, MIS, materials, volumes, and further HIPRT reading.

It is for intermediate graphics programmers who know C++ and basic GPU compute and want a HIP path from primary rays to a simple path tracer. Prior CUDA experience helps but is not required.

Access is a free downloadable PDF from GPUOpen with listings and figures across about 29 pages.

It is useful as a structured HIP/HIPRT on-ramp from textbook ray tracing to runnable AMD GPU sample patterns. Link last verified accessible on 2026-09-27. Link last verified accessible on 2026-09-28.
