Description

GPU Gems is a three-volume anthology of advanced real-time graphics techniques published by Addison-Wesley and edited by NVIDIA. All three books and their companion CD sample code are now free to read on the NVIDIA Developer site, with print editions still available from InformIT.

Volume 1 (2004) covers programmable pipeline tricks from leading studios and researchers. Volume 2 expands into general-purpose GPU computing and heavier simulation. Volume 3 (2007) focuses on cutting-edge DirectX 10-era rendering, geometry, and streaming techniques. Each chapter is a self-contained article by a different author from ILM, Stanford, game studios, or NVIDIA's demo team.

Topics span shadows, global illumination approximations, image-based rendering, procedural effects, animation on GPUs, and early GPGPU. Writing assumes solid graphics programming experience and familiarity with shader languages of the era; some APIs are dated but the algorithms remain instructive.

The series won Game Developer Magazine Front Line Awards and was a GDC bookstore bestseller at release. Code archives and chapter PDFs are linked from developer.nvidia.com/gpugems alongside contributor biographies.

Widely regarded in the graphics programming community as a classic reference anthology, frequently listed alongside Real-Time Rendering on recommended-books pages even though individual chapters reflect mid-2000s hardware constraints.
