Description

Nanite Tessellation is the February 2026 opening post of Brian Karis's Graphic Rants series on Nanite Dynamic Tessellation (also called Nanite Dynamic Displacement), the Unreal Engine 5.4 feature that tessellates and displaces Nanite meshes from material graphs.

This intro defines the system, shows patch-to-triangle-to-pixel stages, and explains why amplification still matters after Nanite simplification. Topics include scalar displacement versus high-poly topology cost, image compression advantages, procedural detail, film cage-plus-displacement authoring, and Fortnite-style authoring-up for scalability. Later posts cover approaches, tessellation methods, Reyes links, variable-sized work, caches, and VisBuffer materials.

It is aimed at advanced engine and rendering programmers who already understand Nanite or virtualized geometry. Material artists may follow the motivation, but implementation depth targets graphics engineers.

The series is free HTML on Graphic Rants; this URL is the intro with an indexed list of follow-on posts.

It is useful as the design rationale for Nanite tessellation before the more technical installments.
