Painting Holes in Terrain - Terrain Shaders - Episode 10
Ben Cloward
Visit resource ↗Description
[video] Painting Holes in Terrain - Terrain Shaders - Episode 10 is a Ben Cloward tutorial on enabling terrain hole painting in custom Unreal landscape materials and Unity Shader Graph terrain shaders.
It motivates holes for cave entrances and for skipping pixel shading under covering meshes, then shows Unreal Landscape Visibility Mask on a Masked Opacity Mask, and Unity 6.3 Terrain Texture holes into Alpha Clipping. It notes that holes save pixel cost but not vertex or CPU terrain cost, and opaque materials stay cheaper when holes are unnecessary.
It is for intermediate technical artists following the Terrain Shaders series who already built layered terrain materials.
Access is a free YouTube episode with side-by-side Unreal and Unity walkthroughs.
It is useful when custom terrain shaders block engine hole tools and you need the exact material or graph settings to restore painting.
