Description

Light beam shader in godot is a September 2025 passivestar.xyz tutorial recreating sharp Half-Life 2 style volumetric light shafts as Z-billboarded quads in Godot.

It explains vertex MODELVIEW_MATRIX billboarding around the beam axis, additive unshaded blending, proximity fade from the depth buffer, cone width and sharpness masks, optional gradient and animated noise overlays, and fading the billboard when the camera looks down the beam. A downloadable shader and material are provided for a PlaneMesh MeshInstance3D.

It is for intermediate Godot shader authors who want cheap theatrical light shafts without full volumetric fog. Basic gdshader and matrix vocabulary helps.

The post is a free HTML article with step-by-step shader excerpts, images, and a downloadable archive.

It is useful when real volumetric fog looks soft or expensive and a stylized billboard beam fits the scene mood.
