Description
Foundations of Game Engine Development, Volume 1: Mathematics is Eric Lengyel's engine-oriented math primer published by Terathon Software. At roughly two hundred pages it condenses vectors, matrices, transforms, geometry, and advanced algebra for programmers building their own engines.
Chapter 1 covers vector and matrix fundamentals, dot and cross products, projections, and inversion. Chapter 2 treats coordinate spaces, rotations, reflections, scales, homogeneous coordinates, and quaternions. Chapter 3 addresses triangle meshes, normals, lines, planes, and Plucker coordinates. Chapter 4 introduces Grassmann and geometric algebra with wedge products, bivectors, and rotors.
Exercises close each chapter. The pace assumes prior programming experience but not graduate-level math. Lengyel also authored Mathematics for 3D Game Programming and Computer Graphics; this volume is the leaner companion focused on engine foundations.
Print and digital editions are sold through the official Foundations site and retailers. Code examples stay API-agnostic so the math applies whether you later choose Vulkan, DirectX, or a custom software rasterizer.
Known among custom engine developers as one of the clearest short texts on game math, with the Grassmann algebra chapter frequently cited as a distinctive treatment rarely found in generic linear algebra books.
