Description

Ray Tracing in One Weekend is Peter Shirley's free book series that builds a C++ path tracer from scratch at a weekend-friendly pace. All three volumes are hosted at raytracing.github.io under the CC0 license with optional PDF printing and a GitHub repository for reference implementations.

Book one implements a brute-force path tracer with diffuse and metal materials. The Next Week adds textures, volumes, rectangles, instances, lights, and a bounding volume hierarchy. The Rest of Your Life covers Monte Carlo theory, importance sampling, and deeper integrator mathematics.

Shirley designed the series from university course notes: you write all rendering code without a graphics API yet still produce images with indirect lighting. C++ is used with minimal modern features; typing code along is encouraged over copying the repository wholesale.

Companion CMake builds target inOneWeekend, theNextWeek, and theRestOfYourLife executables. The series is the usual on-ramp before offline renderers like pbrt or real-time DXR samples.

Widely regarded as the best free first path-tracing tutorial for graphics programmers; thousands of developers and university courses start here before advanced rendering books or engine work.
