Description

This Ben Cloward YouTube tutorial is episode 2 of a Terrain Shaders series for Unity and Unreal. It is a single free video on packing and unpacking terrain layer textures after an earlier planning episode.

It covers choosing versatile terrain materials, packing color with roughness or smoothness and normals with occlusion and height in Substance Designer, BC7 import settings, Unity Terrain Texture nodes and a simple-layer subgraph that unpacks CR or CS and NOH data, matrix packing for material wires, shared sampler states, and the matching Unreal material-function unpack path with absolute world UVs and a cheap normal Z approximation.

It is for intermediate technical artists building custom terrain shaders who already know Shader Graph or Unreal material graphs. Unity 6.3 terrain lit support is used in the Unity half of the lesson.

The video is free on YouTube and walks both engines side by side. Sample textures can come from your own packs or Unity production-ready shader samples.

It is useful as a concrete unpacking baseline before later episodes on multi-layer blending and tile breakup.
